The Ambassador participated in a ceremony at Vilnius Airport
to officially transfer ownership of radiation detection
equipment from the U.S. DOE to Lithuania's State Border Guard
Service (SBGS). A copy of the signed transfer of ownership
document was sent by email to DOE's NNSA office on February
23. The detection equipment, which is valued over USD 1M,
was donated to SBGS as part of DOE's Second Line of Defense
program. During the property transfer ceremony Ambassador
Derse underscored President Obama's commitment to prevent
terrorists from acquiring nuclear and radioactive materials.
After the ceremony concluded the Ambassador toured the
airport facilities and observed a demonstration of the
equipment's functionality. The Ambassador thanked the SBGS
for the demonstration and noted that the radiation detection
equipment is certain to thwart attempts to transport
hazardous material through Vilnius Airport.
