(SBU) Acting Political Counselor met January 25 with the Argentine
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Director for Eastern Europe,
Ricardo Forrester, to convey request in reftel. Forrester noted
that MFA Vice Minister Victorio Taccetti had met in December with
the Georgian MFA's Director for the Americas, Otar Berdzenishvili,
and was familiar with the concern about Ecuador's intentions (Note:
A/Pol met with Berdzenishvili in December as well at Department's
request. End Note). Argentina, Forrester said, was strongly
opposed to recognition of the breakaway regions. Forrester said
that he would discuss with Taccetti opportunities to engage the
Ecuadorans.
