SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - PAKISTAN
1. LEAD STORIES: All Friday morning papers front-paged stories about
the major ministries filing their budget requests for fiscal 2010,
noting that the total state budget for the next fiscal year is
estimated to be a record high of more than 90 trillion yen.
2. "U.S. Cross-Border Attacks Reinforce Anti-American Sentiment" The
liberal Asahi wrote from Kabul (9/16): "Cross-border attacks on
Islamic armed guerrillas in northwestern Pakistan by drones operated
by the U.S. military stationed in Afghanistan have intensified under
the Obama administration. Although the Pakistani government has
repeatedly condemned the operations, calling them 'violations of
state sovereignty,' the U.S. has hinted at expanding their scope. It
is almost certain that intensified attacks will unleash
anti-American sentiment among the Pakistani people. These attacks
could run the risk of adversely affecting bilateral [U.S.-Pakistan]
cooperation to combat terrorism."
