powerful earthquake that hit Indonesia's Sumatra Island early
Wednesday evening.
2. "China Should Seek Affluence Instead of Strength" The liberal
Mainichi editorialized (10/1): "For China, which had been invaded by
imperialist powers in the past, becoming a strong country should be
an ideal.... However, China has been advocating such ideas as
'politics for the people' and 'the construction of a harmonized
society' since President Hu Jintao took the leadership. Political
democratization holds the key to realizing that goal. China should
seek affluence instead of strength."
3. "China Should Break Away from Expansionism" The moderate Yomiuri
argued in an editorial (10/1): "While advocating the concept of
'peaceful development,' China has pressed forward in its military
buildup. Beijing should increase transparency in its military
budget, and make efforts to dispel the concerns of its neighbors and
nations in the region.... It is time for China to fulfill its
responsibility as a major power by listening to the voices of the
world and breaking away from expansionism."
