SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEOPLE'S
REPUBLIC OF CHINA
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Thursday morning included the
powerful earthquake that hit Indonesia's Sumatra Island early
Wednesday evening.
2. "China Should Seek Affluence Instead of Strength" The liberal
Mainichi editorialized (10/1): "For China, which had been invaded by
imperialist powers in the past, becoming a strong country should be
an ideal.... However, China has been advocating such ideas as
'politics for the people' and 'the construction of a harmonized
society' since President Hu Jintao took the leadership. Political
democratization holds the key to realizing that goal. China should
seek affluence instead of strength."
3. "China Should Break Away from Expansionism" The moderate Yomiuri
argued in an editorial (10/1): "While advocating the concept of
'peaceful development,' China has pressed forward in its military
buildup. Beijing should increase transparency in its military
budget, and make efforts to dispel the concerns of its neighbors and
nations in the region.... It is time for China to fulfill its
responsibility as a major power by listening to the voices of the
world and breaking away from expansionism."
4. "Can China Become A Different Country After Its 60th
Anniversary?" The business-oriented Nikkei stated in an editorial
(10/1): "China is expected to fulfill its responsibility as a major
power with a great influence on the world on both the economic and
military fronts.... The international community is hoping that China
will be transformed into a major nation that supports freedom and
democracy and upholds human rights in addition to making
international contributions on the economic front."
5. "Democracy Essential for China to Become Open Major Power" The
conservative Sankei editorialized (10/1): "China has increased its
presence in the international community as a major economic and
military power.... However, as China's political and military
affairs lack transparency, other nations' distrust of Beijing
remains strong. In order to promote cooperation with the global
community, it is necessary for China to become an open major power
by pursuing democratization and political reform."
