SUBJECT: UPDATE ON PKK VIOLENCE (OCTOBER 1 - 7, 2009)

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the October 1 - 7 period, two security officials,
including a village guard, were killed, one in clashes with the PKK
in Sirnak province on October 1. The village guard died when he
stepped on a PKK IED in the same province on October 4. Two
security officials were injured when their vehicle hit a PKK IED in
Bitlis province on October 3. The total number of security force
casualties for the year through October 7, was 53 killed and 86
injured.
3. (U) During the same period, four PKKers were captured in
Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa and Tunceli provinces from October 1 to 6.
Two PKK militants surrendered in Siirt and Mardin provinces on
October 2 and 6. According to official TGS website figures, through
the first of October the number of PKK militants killed this year
was 40, the number of those captured was 59, and the number of those
who surrendered was 98.
4. (U) During the reporting period, one civilian was killed due to a
PKK IED in Sirnak province on October 4. The total number of
civilian casualties for the year through the end of the first week
of October, was 15 killed and 24 wounded.
