SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - NUCLEAR COOPERATION BETWEEN NORTH
KOREA AND IRAN
1. LEAD STORIES: Most Thursday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to President Obama's telephone conversation early Thursday
morning with DPJ President Hatoyama.
2. "Nuclear Cooperation between North Korea and Iran Should Be
Prevented" The business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (9/3): "We
learned late last month that the United Arab Emirates captured a
Bahamas-flagged cargo ship carrying North Korean weapons that was
heading to Iran and seized those weapons.... This was the first
cargo inspection and seizure of weapons based on the UN Security
Council Resolution adopted in June. Although we could say that this
shows that the [international sanctions] net against North Korea is
functioning, we should take seriously the fact that North Korea went
ahead and continued its arms exports after the resolution was
adopted.... There is a deep-seated view that North Korea and Iran
are moving forward in their military cooperation.... North Korean
nuclear weapons will threaten world security. Iran has ignored UN
Security Council resolutions and continued its uranium enrichment
program.... The two nations' nuclear development, which undermines
the foundation of nuclear nonproliferation efforts, should be
prevented without fail."
