SUBJECT: MEXICO REQUESTS USG SUPPORT FOR CANDIDACY TO THE
UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM
1. Mexico's Foreign Secretariat (SRE), per diplomatic note
004455 dated August 26, 2009, announced its decision to seek
reelection to the Governing Council of the United Nations
Environment Program for the 2012-2015 term in elections to be
held during the 66th UN General Assembly in 2011. Mexico
seeks U.S. support for its candidacy.
2. In the document attached to the note, Mexico provides
information on its history with the Environment Program and
details its priorities for the 2012-2015 term. Mexico has
been a member of the Governing Council since 1973 and its top
priority if reelected to the Governing Board will be to
"promote the development and adoption of policies that
strengthen environmental protection with an emphasis on
international cooperation."
3. Action Request: Embassy requests Department guidance on
responding to Mexico's appeal for support.
