REF: SECSTATE 83598
1. (SBU) On August 17, Acting Pol/Econ Chief delivered reftel
demarche to Dana Rudaka, Head of Asia and Oceania Division at
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Rudaka said that Latvia is
supportive of the U.S. position, as evidenced by the EU
statement condemning the conviction of ASSK. Rudaka said
Latvia is unlikely to make any individual statement and would
continue to take its lead from the EU on the matter. Rudaka
also noted the successful visit of Senator Webb to Burma and
reiterated that Latvia does not maintain diplomatic ties with
the Burma. Post will report any substantive follow up or
press coverage via septel or email.
