SUBJECT: Update on PKK Violence (August 1-7, 2009)

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the August 1-7, 2009, one security official was killed
and one was injured in clashes with the PKK in the Hatay province on
August 7. Another security official was injured during clashes in
the Sirnak province on August 4. The total number of security force
casualties for the year through August 7, was 36 killed and 69
injured.
3. (U) During the same period, four PKKers were captured in the Van
province on August 5, and one PKKer surrendered in the Sirnak
provinces on August 4. According to official TGS website figures,
through the first week of August the number of PKK militants killed
and injured this year was 36, the number of those captured was 39,
and the number of those who surrendered was 74.
4. (U) During the reporting period no civilian was killed but one
was injured due to a PKK IED in the Sirnak province on August 5.
The total number of civilian casualties for the year through the end
of the first week of August, was 10 killed and 22 wounded.
