SUBJECT: MOZAMBIQUE RATIFIES COMPREHENSIVE NUCLEAR TEST BAN
TREATY
1. Mozambique ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty (CNTBT) on November 4, 2008, becoming the 146th
country to do so. According to the treaty, Mozambique cannot
carry out any tests involving the explosion of nuclear
weapons or any type of nuclear explosions; it is obligated to
avoid such explosions in any place under its jurisdiction or
control; and it must not encourage other nations to carry out
nuclear explosions.
2. Mozambique signed the CNTBT on September 26, 1996, the
day it opened for signature. On March 26, 2008, Mozambique
ratified the Treaty of Pelindaba which creates a nuclear
weapon free zone treaty in Africa and prohibits the testing,
development and stationing of nuclear weapons in a member,s
territory.
