SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - THAILAND
1. LEAD STORIES: All papers gave top play to moves
within the LDP to select a party leader to replace
Prime Minister Fukuda.
2. "National Reconciliation Needed to Restore Public
Order" The business-oriented Nikkei editorialized
(9/3): "Thai Prime Minister Samak declared a state of
emergency in Bangkok on Tuesday.... The state of
emergency will enable the military to calm the
situation. Civic groups should immediately stop
violence, which undermines the rule of law, and the
prime minister should restore public order. If further
bloodshed occurs, the split between the government and
the protesters could widen. We hope that both the
government and the military will act with caution....
Democracy in Thailand is being tested. Prime Minister
Samak should heal the rift, which is the root of the
current turmoil, and achieve national reconciliation."
