SUBJECT: SEYCHELLES- FY 2007 SELF HELP FINANCIAL STATUS REPORT
1. SUMMARY: During FY 2007 Embassy Port Louis granted the $20,000
allotment for the Ambassador's Self Help Program to four diverse
projects. While one of the projects is complete, the rest are still
in progress and performing satisfactorily. Post is cautiously
optimistic that all projects will be completed by October 31, 2008.

Project Title: Innovative school project for students
Beneficiaries: 3 schools- around 150 students

Description of Activity: Funds used to carry out an inventory
of rare fruits and medicinal plants and crops. Project aims to
encourage students to discover traditional food crops and medicinal
plants, conserve them in their school gardens, and use them in their
daily life. Pilot gardens in three local schools will be part of the
project. Funds generated from the sale of seedlings, plants, and
fruits will be reinvested in the running nursery and gardens to
sustain the project.

Project Title: Environmental Protection project
Beneficiaries: 10,000 visitors yearly

Description of Activity: Funds used to purchase materials,
supplies, and equipment to refurbish the Cousin Island visitors'
reception facility for an environment suited for the needs of
visitors and island management. The island is a nature reserve and
is open to visitors and to students once a week for educational
programs.

sustain the association and will help women earn an income.

Project Title: Course Materials for a Workshop

Description of Activity: Funds used to purchase a photocopier
and a printer to produce course materials for a workshop that
targets vulnerable groups such as young people, teenagers, and
single parents. The workshop encourages them to use
self-empowerment skills to overcome problems associated with risky
behavior; and seeks to inculcate human values, self management, and
leadership and forgiveness skills.
