SUBJECT: MEXICO SEEKS U.S. SUPPORT FOR ITS MEMBERSHIP BID
TO UN BODIES
REF: 9/18 MERZ/STICKLES EMAIL (DIPNOTES ATTACHED)
1. Mexico's Foreign Ministry has sent Post diplomatic notes
seeking USG support for the GOM's bid to become a member of
the following UN bodies:
-- ECOSOC's Commission on Sustainable Development for the
period 2010-2013 which apparently comes up for a vote in
April 2009. Mexico touts its own national policies dedicated
to promoting conservation and biodiversity and its commitment
to the adoption of decisions that reinforce sustainable
development.
-- ECOSOC's Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal
Justice for the period 2010-2013 which also apparently comes
up for a vote in April 2009. Mexico stressed that combating
organized crime represents one of the government's highest
priorities and maintained it was committed to reinvigorating
the role of this commission in preventing crime and promoting
rule of law.
-- Human Rights Council for the period 2009-2012 which
apparently comes up for vote in May 2009. Mexico is seeking
reelection and stressed its commitment to human rights and
its commitment to the consolidation of the Human Rights
Council as the primary institution within the UN entrusted
with promoting human rights.
2. Action Request: Post welcomes any information we could
share with the GOM regarding our views on its bid for these
UN bodies.
