REQUESTING MEETING AT UNGA
1. (SBU) This is an ACTION REQUEST. Please see para 4 for
ACTION.
2. (U) On September 3, we received a letter from the Foreign
Ministry (MINREX) requesting a meeting for Nicaraguan Foreign
Minister Samuel Santos with Assistant Secretary for Western
Hemisphere Thomas A. Shannon on the margins of UNGA. The
text of the unofficial translation is in para 3 below.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua
- Office for North America, presents its compliments to the
Honorable United States Embassy, and makes reference to the
63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly,
scheduled to take place on September 16 to 20 of this year.
On this point, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs to the
Honorable Embassy that the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Comrade Samuel Santos Lopez, would like to meet with the
Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas
Shannon on the margins of the United Nations General
Assembly, to discuss issues of bilateral interest.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Nicaragua - Office for North America, requests
the assistance of the Embassy to convey this request to the
authorities of its country; at the same time, the Ministry
avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Honorable
United States Embassy the assurance of its highest
consideration.
