OSSETIA AND ABKHAZIA
RE: STATE 91894
1. (SBU) On August 27th post delivered reftel points on opposition
to Russian recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to Harri Tiido,
Deputy Secretary General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. We also provided copies of the points to counterparts in
the Prime Minister and President's office.
2. (SBU) The Minister of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on
August 26 calling Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's decision to
recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
"unacceptable" and a "breach of international law and the principles
of stability in Europe." In addition, the MFA announced that in a
meeting with Russian Ambassador Nikolai Uspenski on August 27,
Foreign Minister Urmas Paet had condemned Russia's decision and
called on the GOR to respect Georgia's territorial integrity, follow
the cease-fire agreement and withdraw Russian forces from Georgia
immediately.
