SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED ON WESTERN SAHARA TALKS
REF: STATE 88765
(SBU) On August 20, Poloff met with MFA IO Section Chief Do Hung
Viet to stress, per reftel, the importance of an early resumption of
talks on Western Sahara and to urge Vietnam to support the continued
tenure of SYG Special Envoy Peter Van Walsum. Viet said that
Vietnam understands the responsibility of the international
community to support negotiations and shares an interest in
facilitating a political solution acceptable to both sides of the
conflict. He took note of the U.S. position on Van Walsum and
promised to report the substance of the demarche to his superiors in
the MFA and to Vietnam's mission at the United Nations.
