SUBJECT: CZECH PARTICIPATION AT UNGA - NOT FINALIZED
REF: STATE 72078
1. (SBU) Czech MFA Deputy Director of the UN Department,
David Cervenka, informed EmbOff that Foreign Minister Karel
Schwarzenberg will attend the 63rd UN General Assembly
(UNGA). The MFA is still awaiting confirmation regarding the
participation of Head of Government, Prime Minister Mirek
Topolanek, and Head of State, President Vaclav Klaus. The
MFA does not expect President Klaus to participate this year.
While the FM's travel plans have not been finalized, the MFA
anticipates that Schwarzenberg will remain in NYC for much of
the UN General Debate as he will participate in several
related events, both in his role as Czech FM and because the
Czechs (as of July 1) are part of the EU Troika.
2. (SBU) At the working level, Czech MFA Director of the UN
Department, Jan Michal, expects to be in NYC for the first
week of the UNGA, and part of the second week. Michal will
represent the GOCR at the September 29 CONUN meeting.
Schwarzenberg and Michal both speak English. The Czechs will
provide us with an update on GOCR participants and travel
dates once they have more definite plans.
