SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - IRISH REJECTION OF EU
TREATY
1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Monday morning
included the international conference on oil in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia, during which the host nation reiterated
its earlier pledge to increase oil production by
200,000 barrels a day starting in July.
2. "No Clear Course in Sight for EU Treaty" The
business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (6/23):
"Ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, the basic
document for European unification, has become
uncertain. On June 12 Ireland rejected the treaty in a
public vote. EU leaders discussed the matter last week
but only agreed to hold another discussion on specific
measures. Although the treaty was expected to come into
effect in January 2009, it has become impossible to
meet that schedule. Although Ireland's rejection is
unlikely to have an immediate impact on EU activities,
the turmoil over the treaty could gradually influence
developments."
