SUBJECT: ALLEGATIONS THAT SINGAPORE FIRM BROKERED SALE OF
WEAPONS FROM NORTH KOREA TO BURMA
1. (U) In April, local media reported on a story that first
appeared in the Japanese press that North Korea had exported
multiple rocket launchers to Burma through a Singaporean
trading company.
2. (SBU) The allegations that a local trading company was
involved in the sale of rocket launchers from North Korea to
Burma were fully investigated and there is no evidence a
Singaporean firm was involved or that such a transaction took
place, Sharon SEAH Li-Lian, MFA Assistant Director for the
International Organisations Directorate, told Emboffs June 5.
Ms. Seah's response echoed a written statement Foreign
Minister George Yeo issued May 26 in response to a question
from Parliament. Singapore agencies continue to monitor the
situation closely and will undertake enforcement actions if
necessary, Ms. Seah said.
