SUBJECT: OMANI RESPONSE TO FRIENDS OF IRAQ CONFERENCE

1. (SBU) Post delivered ref A invitation to the Friends of
Iraq Conference on May 13 via diplomatic note. The Omani
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) contacted the Embassy on
May 24 to request a copy of the agenda for the conference.
On May 28, post transmitted ref B information, including the
proposed conference agenda, to the MFA under cover of another
diplomatic note.
2. (SBU) During a June 1 meeting with Minister Responsible
for Foreign Affairs Yusef bin Alawi, the Ambassador urged the
Omani government to participate in the Friends of Iraq
Conference. Bin Alawi responded that he would "take a close
look" at the invitation and agenda. Post will follow up with
MFA and Ministry of Defense officials to promote Omani
attendance at the event.
