SUBJECT: BRUNEI BRIEFED ON GLOBAL MARITIME PARTNERSHIPS
Ref: State 50488
1. (SBU) Charge delivered reftel briefing on May 29 to Malai HjH
Halimah, Director of the Political II Department (U.S. and non-ASEAN
member countries) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(MoFAT) and Florence Chong, Assistant Director for International
Organizations at MoFAT and point of contact for the Proliferation
Security Initiative. Halimah and Chong welcomed the briefing,
seeing the GMP as a useful collective label to apply to disparate
initiatives on maritime security. Beyond that, they said that they
would welcome further information as the USG fleshes out this
concept and would review how Brunei could best participate in
GMP-branded initiatives.
