SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF
ISRAEL
1. LEAD STORIES: Friday morning papers continued to
give top play to the devastation in quake-hit Sichuan
Province in southwest China.
2. "No Future with Status Quo" The moderate Yomiuri
editorialized (4/16): ". . . . In the past 60 years,
Israel has become a wealthy nation with its per-capita
GDP exceeding that of South Korea or Eastern European
countries. The people of Israel can be proud of the
development of their nation. However, the public order
in the country remains unstable, and the number of
people who think their nation is heading in the wrong
direction is said to be increasing. Predicament of the
Palestinians and the repeated failures in Middle East
peace talks may be affecting the feelings of the
Israeli people. . . . The people of Israel appear to be
increasingly distrustful of their leaders, who have
been unable to bring peace to the country. . . .
Leaders of both Israel and the Palestinian Authority
need to come up with specific measures to settle their
territorial disputes."
