SUBJECT: BANGLADESH INFORMED REGARDING USG PRIORITIES FOR
BURMA CONFERENCE
REF: A. A) SECSTATE 55244
B. B) DHAKA 549
1. (U) POL/ECON Counselor delivered REF A demarche regarding
the May 25 Burma Conference to Foreign Ministry Director
Americas and Pacific and Director UN Affairs on May 24. In
delivering the points, we stressed the importance of a
coordinated response by the international community. We
asked that the points be conveyed to Bangladesh's Ambassador
in Rangoon, who will represent the GOB at the May 25
conference. Our MFA interlocutors promised to follow up at
opening of business May 25.
2. (U) Comment: Because REF A arrived during Bangladesh's
weekend, we are not sure how quickly the GOB foreign policy
apparatus will be able to respond to our request. If
possible, we suggest that Embassy Rangoon reach out to the
Bangladeshi Embassy to reinforce our demarche here in Dhaka.
We will follow up with the GOB early May 25.
