(SBU) Jordanian Ministry of Labor Advisor Lejo Sibbel told
poloff April 1 that all striking Vietnamese workers at the W
& D Apparel Company in the al-Tajamouat Qualifying Industrial
Zone (QIZ) who wanted to return to Vietnam had been
voluntarily repatriated. Following the GVN's decision not to
request IOM assistance (Ref B), the GOJ coordinated with the
GVN the repatriation of approximately 166 of the 176 workers
who wanted to return to Vietnam. The workers departed via
commercial airlines, paid for by the GVN, and traveled in
several groups beginning on March 27 and concluding on April
1. Sibbel explained that the remaining ten workers changed
their minds, and decided to remain in Jordan and return to
work at the factory. Sibbel confirmed that MOL inspectors
verified that all departing workers had been paid according
to their contracts before leaving. He also said that the MOL
inspectorate would return to the factory shortly to engage
management in further discussions about management practices,
check on the conditions of workers, and ensure that all
workers remained in possession of their passports.
