SUBJECT: DEMARCHE ON IMPLEMENTATION OF INTERNATIONAL HEALTH
REGULATIONS
REF: STATE 33263
1. Poloff, USAID Chief of Health Office, Meri Sinnitt and
Project Management Specialist, Eshete Yilma delivered reftel
points and shared the International Health Regulations (IHR)
plan with Ministry of Health (MoH) officials on April 17th.
The MoH has in place a System Integrated Disease and
Surveillance Response that tracks twenty-three diseases
(including malaria) nation-wide. Information is also
systematically collected at the Kebele (village) as well as
Woreda (district) levels by health workers. There is also a
government of Ethiopia (GoE) Avian Human Influenza
Preparedness and Response Task Force, which is organized into
three subcommittees of varying capacities: resource
mobilization, disease prevention, and control
advocacy/communication. PolOff, Sinnitt and Yilma met with
Dr. Berhanu Amare, Avian Influenza Coordinator, and Dr. Daddi
Jima, the Associate Head of Vector-Borne disease Prevention
and Control Team. We were instructed to direct any further
follow up questions to Dr. Kebba Jaiteh, Ethiopia's Emergency
Humanitarian Action (EHA) Officer at WHO.
