included a report speculating that the government-
sponsored new antiterrorism bill will be enacted by
this weekend.
2. "President Bush to Visit Middle East Today" The
conservative Sankei's report from Cairo stated (1/9):
"President Bush will visit Israel today for the first
time since taking office as the start of an eight-day
tour of the region. The President, who appears eager to
make this trip a step toward diplomatic progress in the
region, including Palestinian peace, before his term
ends next year, is expected to urge both the Israelis
and Palestinians to move forward their peace
negotiations. In the face of the confrontation on
Sunday between American and Iranian vessels in the
Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, the President
will likely stress to Gulf nations, including Saudi
Arabia, the threat posed by Iran, which is allegedly
pursuing nuclear weapons. President Bush will also
likely seek those nations' support for the U.S. policy
of viewing Tehran as an enemy."
