SUBJECT: MEXICO SEEKS SUPPORT FOR CANDIDATE TO CEDAW IN
JUNE ELECTION
1. Mexico's Foreign Ministry (SRE) sent AmEmbassy Mexico a
dipnote requesting the USG support Mercedes Barquet Montane
as Mexico's candidate to the Convention for the Elimination
of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in
elections scheduled for when CEDEW convenes for its 41 rst
convention June 30 - July 18. SRE's note calls attention to
Barquet's
-- extensive experience in the investigation of questions
relating to gender particularly in her capacity as a
professor and researcher at the Colegio de Mexico;
-- collaboration in the design of Masters program in Gender
Studies for la Universidad Mayor de San Andres en La Paz;
-- participation on many Mexican delegations to international
conferences centered on gender questions.
2. Action Request: Post requests guidance regarding how to
respond to the GOM's appeal for USG support for its
candidate.
