SUBJECT: NIGERIA: DEMARCHES DELIVERED ON HUMAN RIGHTS
REF: A. STATE 163375
B. STATE 163395 AND PREVIOUS
(U) Poloff delivered demarches on the mandate of the Special
Rapporteur on Sudan (ref A) and country specific human rights
resolutions (ref B) to Dr. Maieygun, Assistant Director for
International Organizations at the Nigerian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. Poloff thanked the GON for its "yes" vote
on the Burma resolution in the Third Committee and asked for
Nigeria's continued support for the resolution in plenary.
She also urged Nigeria to closely consider the merits of the
Iran, Belarus, and North Korea resolutions. She noted that
Nigeria has exerted tremendous diplomatic and military effort
to help resolve the crisis in Darfur and urged the GON to do
all within its power to ensure that the mandate of the
Special Rapporteur is maintained. Dr. Maieygun promised to
share our position with his colleagues in New York and Geneva.
