SUBJECT: ESTONIA TO SUPPORT COMMON EU POSITION ON SANCTIONS AGAINST
BURMA
REF: STATE 146862
1. (U) On October 24, 2007, poloff met with Thea Karin, Burma Desk
officer at the MFA. Karin acknowledged the demarche points and
indicated that the EU will be meeting in Brussels next Thursday
(November 1) to continue a discussion on possible sanctions. Karin
pointed out that as the EU will act as a common entity on this
point,
the Government of Estonia will support the common EU position.
Karin
also stated that Estonia supports the idea that sanctions should be
targeted towards regime leaders and should not negatively effect
civilians. The Government of Estonia would also like to avoid any
situation which results in the political isolation of Burma.
