Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Maldives Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Assistant Director for UN Affairs Ahmed
Shiaan on October 23. Shiaan said Maldives remains undecided
on the country specific resolutions on Burma, North Korea,
Belarus, and Iran. The Maldives delegation in New York is
still reviewing the U.S. sponsored resolution on rape as an
instrument of state policy. He noted that although Maldives
is an OIC country, the Government will carefully review the
text of the OIC resolution on religious defamation before
deciding whether to endorse it. He confirmed that Maldives
will oppose the EU resolution on the death penalty.
