SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - MISSILE DEFENSE IN
POLAND
LEAD STORIES: Most Thursday morning papers gave top
play to a finding by the Pension Fund Association that
about 1.24 million retirees have not been paid some
154.4 billion yen in pensions they are entitled to due
to mismanagement of pension records.
1. "Tension Growing Between US and Russia" Warsaw
correspondent Sakuraba of the business-oriented Nikkei
commented on Polish Defense Minister Szczyglo's
disclosure of his country's plan to begin the
construction of a missile-defense facility next spring
(9/6): "Tension is bound to increase between the US and
Russia in Europe, given that the US and Poland are set
to accelerate a joint missile-defense program in
defiance of Moscow's opposition. Concerns have already
been raised about the possible emergence of a 'new Cold
War' between a pro-Washington camp and a pro-Moscow
bloc. Similarly, the US also plans to pursue MD with
Japan and Australia in order to counter the North
Korean nuclear threat. Debate over MD will likely gain
momentum around the world, and it could have negative
implications.... While the political and military
landscape in Asia is different from that of Central
Europe, it is possible that China will express its
displeasure with the growing US involvement in MD and
take a more confrontational stance toward Washington."
