SUBJECT: LATVIAN RESPONSE TO CITES COP 14 PROPOSALS
REF: STATE 57912
1. (U) Post contacted Gunta Gabrane, Deputy Director of the Latvian
Nature Protection Board to deliver reftel demarche. Gabrane stated
that the GOL would follow the EU consensus, and after checking on
what the consensus positions were, gave us the following
information.
2. (U) The GOL, she stated, will not support the US proposal to
remove the bobcat, as they believe that look-alike issues exist with
other Lynx species. No EU position exists, according to Gabrane, on
the pink and red corals, and the issue would be worked out later.
She said that the EU should support the US proposal on the sawfish.
She stated that the GOL will follow the German lead on the spiny
dogfish and porbeagle items, but that the Japanese would probably
harpoon the spiny dogfish proposal.
