SUBJECT: CONSTITUTIONAL COURT CONFIRMS PRESIDENTIAL VICTORY
REF: BAMAKO 0489
1. The Malian Constitutional Court on June 9th confirmed
President Toure's victory in the April 29th election (reftel)
with 71 percent of the votes cast.
2. The decision by the Constitutional Court makes President
Toure's victory official. Security forces were in heightened
alert around Bamako the day of the announcement, but there
were no reports of electoral-related violence of protests.
As expected, opposition members denounced the decision, but
instructed their supporters to fight the decision
"democratically and peacefully" through Mali's constitutional
process. Most Malians have accepted the results, and they,
and the opposition, will now look to the legislative
elections in July.
