1. (U) Massive flooding continues to plague Bolivia's eastern
departments of the Beni and Santa Cruz.
- Damage estimates from the flooding described in reftel have
risen to USD 250 million nationwide, according to press
reports.
- Flood waters have spread to new areas, and an outbreak of
dengue fever has reportedly expanded to nearly 1,800 cases.
- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that Venezuela
would donate USD 5 million and two helicopters, as well as
provide engineers and doctors, to assist with the disaster.
2. (SBU) USAID officials traveled to Trinidad, capital of the
Beni, on February 27 to assess the situation and make
recommendations for additional assistance as appropriate.
The Ambassador will visit Trinidad on March 5 to deliver
assistance, demonstrate solidarity, and discuss the crisis
there with local authorities. U.S. aid donated for the
disaster totals USD 732,000 to date.
