1. There were no significant avian influenza (AI) developments in
Japan during the period November 22 to December 07. No human or
animal outbreaks of H5N1 AI were reported in Japan during the above
period.

2. On November 24, in response to the recent outbreak of avian
influenza H5 in South Korea, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry
and Fisheries (MAFF) announced that it has instituted a ban on the
importation of live poultry and poultry meat and guts from South
Korea. MAFF has requested the South Korean Government to provide
more detailed information on the outbreak. Japan imported 1,497
tons of poultry meat and two tons of processed egg products from
South Korea in 2005. The GOJ requires all passengers entering from
South Korea to sterilize the soles of their shoes . Vehicles
arriving from South Korea are also required to be sterilized.

3. Kyoto Sangyo University has established a research center for
Avian Influenza and opened the facility to the media on November 30.
The research center has two experimental laboratories and a
reference room with a total area of 284 square meters. Professor
Koichi Otsuki, former Director of the Avian Zoonoses Research Center
of Tottori University leads the new center. Professor Otsuki will
focus research on low pathogenic viruses at the center until another
facility for high pathogenic viruses is established in 2008.
