SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - HAITI
On July 30, center-left "Diario Siete" (circ. 23,000) ran
an editorial by Defense Ministry of Chile international
analyst Maria Ines Ruz entitled, "Haiti: Chile Was and
Is There When Needed." Quotes:
"There is consensus that Haiti's structural poverty and
institutional problems have no short-term solutions and
that issues of political stability and future governance
in that country cannot be resolved without international
aid.... Social and economic growth in Haiti, and even
the survival of its people, depend to a large degree on
the effort that is being made to fulfill the goals set by
the UN.... The goals and targets of the mission in Haiti
(MINUSTAH) have to do not only with disarming groups and
protecting civilians, but more importantly with
guaranteeing the peace and stability that will enable
Haitians themselves to set their future.... Haiti is not
alone. 37 countries and 6,841 soldiers have sealed a
commitment that ties them to the future of eight million
Haitians in this international solidarity initiative."
