SUBJECT: CZECH RESPONSE TO DEMARCHE ON PROPOSED CHR TEXT ON
THE STATE OF DEMOCRACY
REF: SECSTATE 39640
1. (SBU) Poloff spoke with Mr. Jan Kaminek of the
Department of Human Rights at the Czech MFA on March 10
regarding the referenced demarche asking for feedback about a
planned resolution on the state of democracy and democratic
elections in the world. Mr. Kaminek told Poloff candidly
that while of course there would be no discussion of whether
or not to support such a resolution, unfortunately the Czechs
are not currently in a position to sponsor such a resolution.
Mr. Kaminek explained that the Czech Human Rights Department
and their mission in Geneva is simply too small and
overworked at this point. However, he stated firmly that if
such a resolution is tabled, the Czechs would certainly
support it.
