Exciting Opportunity for University Sport

"The announcement of the membership and terms of reference of Government's Ministerial Taskforce into Sport, Fitness and Leisure represents an exciting opportunity for university and tertiary student sport," said University Sport New Zealand (USNZ) Acting-President Darel Hall this evening.
"University Sport has an important role in maintaining and increasing sport participation rates during tertiary study, a time of transition when many people are tempted to move away from a balanced lifestyle which includes physical activity"
"University Sport and its member student associations and sports councils have taken initiatives in developing trans-Tasman links, for example in touch, underwater hockey, karate, and soccer. And let's not forget that the NZU rugby team beat Australian Universities 15-13 in the curtain raiser to the NSW vs. Argentina match recently.
Taskforce member Farah Palmer was the New Zealand Universities Sportsperson of the Year for 1998 and the 1998 New Zealand Universities Maori Sportsperson of the year. Farah is also completing her Ph.D.
"Farah will bring a current student perspective to the Taskforce. USNZ will also engage in dialogue with the Taskforce to articulate student contributions within the current environment and student potential in the next 25 years," Darel Hall said.
