DR KEITH HAMMETT'S EMESIA 'JASPA'
Following on from the success of the Seaview Gem Series of Nemesias released last year, world renowned plant breeder Dr
Keith Hammett and Seaview Nurseries Ltd are proud to announce the new variety in the series - 'Jasper'.
Like all precious things, this gem is set to be a winner combining its unique salmon colouration with the strength of
breeding inherent in the Gem Series.
Dr Hammett has been breeding this series of Nemesias for over three years, and continues the groundbreaking work with
'Jasper', a new variety which is aptly named for its colour.
The Seaview Gem Series is one of New Zealand's unsung export success stories. The breeding and trialing work undertaken
by Seaview and Dr Hammett has resulted in extensive interest in the Gem Series, with plants being exported to the USA,
Europe, Australia and Japan.
Dr Hammett says "I'm interested in breeding plants that people can have confidence in, and that give good value for
money. Through thorough testing, I know that in the Gem Series, we have bred a series of Nemesias that will stand up to
the rigourous New Zealand conditions and still perform well."
A long-flowering perennial, Nemesia 'Jasper' is an ideal plant for mass plantings in borders, and especially for use in
containers. Growing approximately 30cm high, it covers itself in tiny salmon coloured flowers for 10 months of the year,
even in the bleakest winter.
"Jasper is a real breakthrough in perennial Nemesias", Dr Hammett says. "It's the first time that a perennial has been
bred that has red tones, one of the characteristics of the annual Nemesias, and for that reason alone it's going to be a
world beater!"
Nemesia 'Jasper' has been judged by the New Zealand Gardening Industry Association as one of the 'Stars of Spring', a
grouping of plants which showcases New Zealand's champion new releases. 'Jasper' will be one of the feature plants in
the 'Stars of Spring' exhibit at the Ellerslie Flower Show and will be available through all good garden centres from
late August onwards.
