A cold front brought patchy rain or showers to the South Island overnight Saturday and into today as it moved northwards, and will move up the lower North Island this afternoon and evening, bringing a few showers as it goes. A warm front is expected to bring rain to western and southern parts of the South Island on Monday, briefly becoming heavy in the ranges. However, the next major weather system is expected to affect New Zealand mid-week, and is currently moving over eastern Australia.

A low pressure system is expected to skirt to the south of New Zealand on Wednesday. Northerly winds ahead of this system will drag warm, moisture-laden sub-tropical air down from the north late on Tuesday and into Wednesday. The northerly winds will ensure that temperatures remain above average for June across the country, and also bring rain to many places.

“This is a great recipe for rain in the north and west of both islands, with some heavy falls expected, and even a chance of thunder,” said MetService Meteorologist Claire Flynn. “However, those in the east of the South Island from Canterbury southwards are likely to escape the rainfall due to sheltering from the ranges, with temperatures here possibly peaking around 20C. We will continue to keep an eye on this developing situation, and Severe Weather Watches or Warnings are likely to be issued nearer the event.”
