RBA Corporate, the corporate and entertainment division of The Robert Bruce Agency is very pleased to introduce prolific award-winning author, columnist and media personality Jesse Bering to New Zealand editors and producers.
Jesse Bering is noted for his frank and humorous handling of controversial issues, especially those dealing with sex, evolution, religion, and morality. He is a regular contributor to Scientific American and Slate; and has written for many other outlets, including New York Magazine, The Guardian, The New Republic, and Discover.
Starting in September a new weekly column - ‘Promiscuous Minds’ - will be featured on the Playboy website. Building on the success of his critically acclaimed book, PERV, the column will “delve deep into the science of sex and relationships."
Jesse’s first book, The Belief Instinct (2011), was named one of the top 25 books of the year by the American Library Association. This was followed by the release of his collection of previously published essays, Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That? (2012), a taboo-breaking work earning him the moniker, “The Hunter S. Thompson of Science Writing.”
Jesse’s most recent—and most controversial—book, Perv (2013), was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and received widespread critical acclaim.
‘Bering’s writing is intelligent and sharp-witted, but also incredibly personal, at times bordering on the confessional. This style is effective at guiding the reader through a world considered by many taboo.

"Erudite” … “remarkable” … “consistently rich and engaging … I have yet to come away from reading one of [Bering’s] essays and not feel considerably better informed than I was just minutes before.”

Jesse has been featured on numerous documentaries, TV shows and radio programmes as an expert science communicator. These have included Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Conan, Chelsea Lately, Q, NPR’s All Things Considered, and the BBC.
He has given invited talks—both academic and for a general audience—all over the world. Several of his science-writing projects have recently been optioned by major producers in the United States and are in pre-production.
Jesse Bering began his career as a psychology professor at the University of Arkansas and is the former director of the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University Belfast. He is now playing a key role as Associate Professor at the world-leading Centre For Science Communication at the University of Otago.
