A cooler but drier weekend

A cooler but drier weekend
The active weather of the past week will gradually give way to a drier and cooler spell as a large anticyclone builds across the country from the Tasman Sea by the weekend.
MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"The weather will quieten down over the next few days, giving us a break from the raincoats and umbrellas, but a few extra layers might come in handy as cooler air moves up from the south."
The low, currently lying west of the country, will continue to bring rain or showers to many areas to the end of the working week. A cooler southerly change, along with building higher pressures, will help to clear away the wet weather as we head into the weekend.
The cooling effect will be felt mostly over the southern half of the country, with a dusting of fresh snow on the southern ranges, and daytime highs struggling to get into the low teens.
Once the cooler air sets in and winds ease back, some frosty nights are quite likely across much of the South Island as well as sheltered parts of the North Island.
For Mother's Day this Sunday, high pressure should bring plenty of dry and fine weather - perfect for spoiling Mum. Although the day will start off on the cool side with some patches of fog possible, the temperatures will pick up with maximums forecast to reach the mid to high teens.
The large anticyclone will not be in a hurry to move on so a mostly dry and fine spell should dominate the country early next week.
