ANZAC day weather
As the sun rises on Friday morning many New Zealanders will be taking part in ANZAC day dawn services. With a
continuation of a cloudy northwest feed of air across New Zealand on Friday, the country will be split between some
cloudier and wetter weather conditions in the west and generally clearer skies and drier conditions in the east.
For the national service held in Wellington there is the chance of an early shower most likely to the north of the city
at dawn itself. For the services in Auckland and Christchurch the forecast is dry with areas of cloud. Cloudier
conditions with patchy rain or drizzle are likely to remain through the day from Waikato to Westland. Southland and
Otago are also in for a wet start to the day but with conditions improving through the day. Fine and dry in the east of
both Islands, until a late southerly brings some rain from Rangiora southward.
MetService meteorologist John Law said "For ANZAC day New Zealand is going to find itself still in a northwest flow
meaning that if you are off to the dawn services in the west of the country plan for the chance of some rain while the
east of the country looks to be staying dry"
Looking ahead through the rest of ANZAC day and into the weekend, a front is forecast to move northwards across the
country through Friday before weakening away across the north of New Zealand on Saturday. A ridge of higher pressure
builds in behind the front, bringing fine weather across much of the country during the weekend. "We should see the
return of some fine and sunny weather on Saturday as one front clears from the north, but another system waiting in the
wings for the start of next week should be heralded by showers returning to western shores late on Sunday" Law said
