Valentines, Sport and Lanterns
You don't have to be in Te Aroha to enjoy the best of the weather for Valentine's Day. The North Island should enjoy
fine weather except for some showers in the west which are forecast to fade away during the day. For the South Island,
Friday should improve for many as rain clears in Southland and Otago but a few showers may affect parts of Canterbury
late in the day.
The weekend's weather looks set to be dominated by high pressure and generally settled conditions. "For many, fine
weather is the order of the weekend but there are likely to be a few spots where the odd afternoon shower may develop,
so keep a check on the latest forecasts" MetService meteorologist John Law advised. "However, there is some wetter
weather in store for Fiordland this weekend. Scattered rain is possible in the east as well on Saturday, south of Banks
Peninsula, but this should clear to leave a drier, brighter Sunday".
Blue sky returned to the capital on Wednesday and cricket fans are hoping it lasts for the second test as the Blackcaps
take on India at the Basin Reserve. The current forecast for the Capital on Friday and over the weekend is a favourable
one, albeit with some caveats. "On the whole the forecast is looking dry for Wellington over the next few days" Law
commented "there is the chance of a shower on Friday and the northerly winds are likely to make things tricky at times
but heading into the weekend high pressure returns across New Zealand bringing some more settled conditions and lighter
winds."
It is a busy weekend in Auckland too with plenty going on, including the Lantern festival and the NRL Auckland 9s at
Eden Park. High pressure sliding across the top of New Zealand looks set to bring some settled weather keeping Auckland
dry and fine while daytime temperatures reach the mid-twenties.
Looking ahead, a developing area of low pressure over the Tasman Sea could bring the return of some wet and windy
weather for parts of New Zealand at the start of next week.
