More than 200 experts to attend international fire conference at the University of Canterbury

More than 200 fire scientists and engineers from all over the world will attend the 11th Symposium of the International
Association for Fire Safety Science at the University of Canterbury (UC) next month.
The February 9 to 14 conference is the pre-eminent fire science symposium held every three years and rotated around the
world between North America, Europe, and Australasia.
Chair of the host committee, UC engineering professor Charles Fleischmann, says the symposium will focus on the science
of fire safety with presentation papers ranging from detailed combustion modelling of wildfires to the impact of climate
change to melting furniture foam to arson fires.
``With the summer fire season upon us, research in this area is extremely topical and relevant this time of year. UC
Associate Professor Michael Spearpoint is co-chairing a workshop looking at benchmarking and fire data sharing.
``UC postgraduates will present on issues such as polyurethane foams, fire scenarios in car parking buildings and the
fire performance of post-tensioned timber box beams.
``Our staff and postgraduates will give a number of presentations and are actively involved in running this year’s
symposium,’’ Professor Fleischmann says.
