TVNZ Tunes into Savings with Activate Technologies

New Zealand media giant TVNZ has implemented an Activate Technologies software solution to streamline its user
management system. Activate automates technology processes such as new user setup, email distribution lists and shared
data management, so that managers and staff can manage their own environment. TVNZ has benefited from better usage of
valuable IT resources, lower software licensing costs and the reduction of security and compliance risks as a result.
TVNZ has over 1000 permanent, casual and freelance staff spread across the country, with 8 people managing and servicing
the IT infrastructure. The new system has saved over 40 hours per week of manual administration for the IT services team
according to TVNZ Technology Service Manager Lisa Arthur.
“Automating user management services has allowed IT staff to concentrate on higher value tasks. Because the IT
department doesn’t own the data, we shouldn’t be the gatekeeper; we’ve removed the bottleneck in the process and enabled
the business users to manage it themselves,” says Arthur. “The feedback from everyone has been very positive.”
Before implementing the Activate solution, access to distribution lists and folders was generic for each TVNZ
department; now team leaders can customise access to each individual. User settings can be setup or modified instantly
at any time, and IT managers maintain universal visibility into the metadata.
The decision was taken to invest in the software despite the economic downturn, recognising its potential to deliver
significant cost efficiencies. Since the Activate solution implementation, TVNZ has further expanded the system to
handle some HR department processes as well.
