Royal Society elects Dr Helen Anderson as a Companion
The Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand has elected Dr Helen Anderson, chief executive of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, as a Companion.
The title of Companion is an honour recognising outstanding leadership in science, and contributions to the promotion and advancement of science and technology in New Zealand.
Dr Helen Anderson was a successful practicing scientist for many years before moving into leadership roles. Since 2004 she has been CEO of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, after being its chief scientific adviser. She has been New Zealand representative’s at several international forums including APEC and the OECD.
The President of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr Garth Carnaby, said the election of Dr Anderson as a Companion was formal acknowledgement of the significant role she had played in the science world.
“Helen has been tireless in her efforts to raise the profile of science and technology in New Zealand. During her tenure as CEO of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology she has made a significant contribution to increasing the impact of research, science and technology on a wide range of policy issues. We are very pleased to recognise her many contributions.”
The Award of the Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand was introduced in 1999 and there are now 30 Companions.
