Science medal winners receive cash bonus
Two of the medal winners at this year’s Science Honours Dinner awards ceremony on Wednesday night received cash awards in addition to their medals.
Professor Kenneth McNatty, who won the Pickering Medal, and Dr Richard Garland, who won the Thomson Medal, each received $15,000 from the Royal Society of New Zealand to further their research.
This is the first year that monetary prizes have been awarded by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
President Garth Carnaby said the prizes were additional recognition of the contribution both men had made to New Zealand science and technology.
“Both winners are leaders in their fields and worthy recipients of these awards.”
Professor McNatty from Victoria University of Wellington won the top award for technology for his contribution to the field of reproductive biology.
Dr Garland who is managing director of NZ Pharmaceuticals won his medal for his leadership, and development and application of science and technology to New Zealand business.
