A new book for boffins
Two Manawatu scientists have brought the wonders of science home in a new book for boffins.
Changing Standards will be published on 5 December, and investigates a range of fascinating and topical subjects, sharing scientific and technical explanations for new developments, issues and inventions.
UCOL’s Associate Professor of Applied Health Science, Dr David Shillington, and Massey University Emeritus Professor of Microbiology, Dr Tim Brown, have compiled the collection of ‘byte-sized problems’ explored in 45 short articles, that cover sport, people, the environment, industry, economics, health and politics.
David and Tim have shared a weekly science column in local newspaper, the Manawatu Standard over three years, and David says the book is a result of many reader’s requests for a collective publication.
The duo specialise in breaking difficult concepts down to more easily sampled levels, using anecdotes and contemporary examples.
David says he feels a sense of duty to communicate these scientific stories to the community and jokes this may be born of teaching. “Science explores the many wonders and puzzles of our world. Some simple items in everyday use have some very interesting stories, and some of these we are only just beginning to learn about.”
He is excited about the publication, and thinks it will make a good read. “Changing Standards is a collection of some of our favourite topics that we’ve looked at over the past three years. We have thoroughly enjoyed writing for the Manawatu readers, so I hope readers can pick up on some of that.”
