InternetNZ Announces Publication Of Internet History Book
InternetNZ (The Internet Society of New Zealand Inc) is pleased to announce the publication of 'Connecting the Clouds - The Internet in New Zealand' - a history of the New Zealand Internet by author and freelance journalist Keith Newman.
The book was commissioned by the Society in 2006 to chronicle the people, activities and events that contributed to the creation, then growth, of telecommunications and Internet technology in this country. It has been published by Auckland-based Activity Press.
As part of his research for the book Newman conducted over 100 interviews with visionaries and scientists, computer programmers, telecommunications experts, engineers, business leaders and politicians. The result is a fascinating tale of the evolution of electronic communications in New Zealand.
InternetNZ Executive Director Keith Davidson says ‘Connecting the Clouds’ is unique for examining from a New Zealand perspective what has proven to be one of the most significant technological changes in human society.
“The book is a highly readable, accurate account of New Zealand’s part in the Internet revolution, and a valuable resource that draws first-hand from almost all of the pioneers involved in its development locally.
“In keeping with the book’s subject matter, InternetNZ also intends publishing it online in a Wiki format, for the general public to be able to refine the work and contribute to keeping it up to date over time,” says Davidson.
‘Connecting the Clouds’ will be officially launched at The National Library, Wellington on Thursday 21 August 2008. If you wish to attend please RSVP to kaylene@internetnz.net.nz by 15 August.
Books will be available for purchase at major bookstores following the launch.
